On Gospel Methodology at BYU

On September 11, Brigham Young University Associate Academic Vice President Richard Osguthorpe spoke at the first Fall 2023 Inspiring Teaching Workshop sponsored by General Education. His topic was “On Gospel Methodology at BYU.” He said it is not enough for professors at BYU to teach morally good content, this content must also be taught in a moral way.

Osguthorpe explained that teaching with a gospel methodology should place maximum demand on learner agency, allowing each student to choose whether they will accept the material being taught. As teachers influence belief, they should seek to instruct rather than indoctrinate, and as they influence behavior, they should focus on training rather than conditioning. He also invited faculty members to pursue inspiring learning — learning that leads to inspiration and revelation. He finished by reminding faculty members they have a prophetic vision to fulfill while teaching at BYU.

Osguthorpe has studied this topic extensively, and his work will soon be published.
