Compassionate Campus: A Wise Response to COVID-19

Tappana.jpg

On September 2, 2021, Shannon Tappana, licensed clinical social worker and the Marriott School Wellness Specialist, led a discussion with GE instructors about the lingering emotional and psychological effects of COVID-19 on faculty, staff, and students.

The pandemic has impacted the campus community in many ways, and Tappana suggested that it is useful to think of COVID in terms of trauma. Trauma results when an individual’s personal resources are not adequate to cope with external stressors, and trauma specifically impacts learning, behavior, and relationships. Understanding this invites instructors to rethink pedagogical practices, and Tappana provided specifics tips for helping students to learn better in classes that continue to be impacted by the pandemic.
