APPLICATION FOR 2008 GE ACADEMY

GE ACADEMY INFORMATION (from the original invitation memo, dated March 3, 2008)

Once again this year, our office will host the Faculty General Education Academy on Teaching and Learning. This year it will be held from Tuesday, July 29 through Thursday, July 31, 2008.  We invite all full-time or part-time BYU faculty who plan to teach a General Education (GE) course during the academic years 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 to submit an application to attend.  In order to facilitate discussion, the number of participants at the Academy will be limited to approximately 70.

The overall objective of the Academy series is to enhance teaching and learning in BYU’s GE courses.  This year’s Academy will focus on the helping students learn. Russ Osguthorpe, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, will be our featured presenter. Significant time will be allotted during the Academy for discussion and for individual faculty members to generate ideas which can be implemented in upcoming GE courses.

It is our hope that the Academy will stimulate creative thinking among participants to improve their courses and to foster greater learning among their students.  Indeed, past participants have reported that the Academy has had a significant positive impact on their classes.  To aid in implementing their ideas, participants will be expected to complete a short written plan for a specific GE course based on applicable principles discussed in or inspired by the Academy.  In addition, follow-up debriefing sessions at the end of future semesters will provide opportunities for professors to share and compare their experiences.  Each participant will be expected to attend at least one of these future debriefing sessions to complete the Academy.

Each Academy participant will receive a professional development grant of $1000 for use in research and curriculum development. Half of this amount, $500, will be provided after attending the full 3-day Academy. The remaining $500 will be provided after the following three steps are completed:

(1) submitting the proposal (before the GE course is taught),

(2) implementing and evaluating course improvements, and

(3) attending the debriefing session.

We plan to make the Academy a hands-on experience, with limited classroom-type instruction, allotting significant time for small group discussion, planning, and writing.  Although preference will be given to instructors of our core GE courses, we hope to have representation from a variety of departments and types of courses.  We strongly encourage all faculty who will be teaching GE courses in the future to apply.
